No, both track chains do not always need to be replaced at the same time. If only one side is worn, damaged, or beyond adjustment, you can often replace that chain alone, but the rest of the undercarriage should be checked before deciding.

The most important issue is matching wear between the new chain and the parts it runs with, especially the sprockets/segments, rollers, idlers, and track shoes. A new chain on heavily worn sprockets or other old components can mesh poorly, increase noise and vibration, and shorten service life. In many cases, the decision comes down to measuring wear, not guessing: look at chain pitch growth, bushing condition, and whether there is still enough adjustment left in the track frame.

A practical rule is this: replace one side only if the opposite side still has usable wear life and the mating components are in acceptable condition. Replace both sides when wear is similar, when the machine is used in demanding conditions, or when you want balanced tension and wear across the undercarriage. If the sprockets are badly worn, they should be evaluated carefully because they usually wear with the chain.
