Function & position
The track chain is the backbone of the undercarriage: forged links, pins and bushings that carry the machine weight down to the shoes and transmit the drive power around the undercarriage. Chains are available in a wide range of pitches to suit machines from mini excavators up to mining-class dozers.
Links are forged and then machined to tight tolerances — rail height, pitch and bolt hole position all decide how the chain mates with rollers, sprocket and shoes. Bushings receive their own heat treatment, because bushing wear is what ultimately sets chain life.

Greased & sealed chains
On excavators, chains are usually greased and sealed: seals keep the grease in and abrasive soil out, pins are greased before pressing so they resist corrosion and weather, and the minimal play between pin and bushing significantly slows down pitch elongation. The result is a substantially longer service life than a comparable dry chain.

Oil-lubricated chains
Bulldozer chains are typically oil-lubricated. After the pin is pressed, the pin-bushing cavity is evacuated and filled with oil, so the joint runs on an oil film for its whole life. A perfect seal is essential — the filling process itself doubles as a leak test, and a joint that loses its oil runs dry and wears rapidly during the constant travel a dozer performs.

The master link
Every chain needs a service point where it can be opened. Dozer chains use a split master link — a two-piece link that bolts together — so the chain can be split and joined on the machine without a track press. On excavator chains, a master pin fulfils the same role.
