// Q&A · Rubber Tracks

How are rubber tracks measured on a mini excavator or dozer?

Expert Answer

You measure a rubber track using three values: width, pitch, and number of links/metal inserts. The final format is usually written as width x pitch x links, for example 230x96x33.

First, measure the track width in millimeters, from edge to edge. Then measure the pitch, meaning the center-to-center distance between two metal inserts or between two consecutive drive lugs. Finally, count the total number of links or inserts around the track. These three data points identify the correct size for compact excavators, mini excavators, skid steers, and other tracked machines.

Be careful not to confuse pitch with width: they are different measurements, and even a small error can result in an incorrect replacement. If the track is badly worn or deformed, always compare the measurements with the machine nameplate, serial number, or the track removed from the other side.
