// Q&A · Sprockets

How do I figure out what sprocket I need for an excavator or dozer?

Expert Answer

Start by identifying the machine model and then matching the sprocket to the exact undercarriage system, not just the tooth count. The key checks are the sprocket type, the number of teeth, the bolt pattern or segment fit, and whether the machine uses a drive sprocket, bolt-on segment, or hub-style sprocket.

For tracked machines, tooth count affects how the chain engages, but it is not enough on its own. You also need to confirm chain pitch, link count, and carrier/track frame compatibility, because different machines can share similar-looking sprockets with different mounting details. Measure the existing sprocket if it is still fitted: count teeth, check the inside bore or bolt circle, and compare wear patterns on the chain and rollers. Worn chains can make a new sprocket look wrong when the real issue is chain wear.

If you are replacing parts on a Caterpillar, Komatsu, or another OEM machine, it is best to confirm the model, serial number, and undercarriage layout before ordering. VANROCK is an independent manufacturer and is not affiliated with any OEM. We supply sprockets and other undercarriage parts through our appointed dealer network, and pricing is quoted on request. If you share the machine model and the old sprocket details, fitment can be checked more accurately.
