How do I know if an excavator sprocket is worn out?
Expert Answer
An excavator sprocket is usually worn out when the tooth profile becomes hooked, pointed, or uneven, or when the track no longer engages smoothly and begins to ride high on the teeth. Severe wear can also make the track run noisier, accelerate chain wear, and increase the risk of poor engagement or derailment.
The quickest check is visual, but inspect the whole undercarriage first. Compare both sides of the machine: uneven wear often points to track misalignment, a tension problem, or a worn chain running against the sprocket. Look for tooth tips that are sharpened, thin, or leaning in one direction, and check whether wear is uniform across the tooth face.
If the sprocket teeth are worn, the sprocket and chain are often approaching the end of their service life together. Replacing only one worn component can shorten the life of the new part, so it is smart to check chain pitch, roller condition, and idler wear at the same time.
