If the shoe wear is uneven across the chain, the problem may also involve alignment, tension, rollers, idlers, or a loose bolt set.

Check the track shoe visually for low grouser height, broken edges, missing bolts or nuts, and damage around the track pad or bolt seats. Compare left and right sides: one side wearing faster often points to steering habits, undercarriage misalignment, or a tension issue. You should also look for metal-to-metal contact marks, which can mean the shoe has been worn thin enough that traction and stability are reduced.

For a proper decision, do not rely on appearance alone. Measure wear at several shoes, inspect the undercarriage for roller and idler wear, and confirm whether the track chain pitch and bolt condition are still serviceable. On tracked machines, shoe wear can be accelerated by abrasive ground, long travel on hard surfaces, and running with incorrect tension.
