Track pins are pressed in and out with a hydraulic track pin press or portable track press, not by hammering. The key is to fully support the chain, align the press ram exactly with the pin centerline, and apply controlled force to push the pin straight through the link bore.

For removal, first slacken the track and find the pin you need to work on. On many chains this is the master pin or service pin, which may have a snap ring, cotter, or marked face for identification. Set the chain squarely on press blocks so the links cannot twist, then press the pin out in one straight movement. If the chain uses a tapered master pin, it may only come out from one side, so check the chain design before pressing.

For installation, clean the bores and inspect the links, pin, and bushing for wear or galling. The new pin is pressed in under the same controlled alignment, usually with the bushing already seated where applicable. If the fit is tight, use the press to keep everything square; forcing the pin with a drift, bucket, or sledge can bell-mouthed the link bores and shorten chain life.

Practical signs the job should be done in a workshop press include tight or seized pins, uneven wear, damaged master-pin hardware, or a chain that needs a full pin-and-bushing service. Common mistakes to avoid are pressing on the wrong side, using poor support blocks, working with too much track tension, and misidentifying the master pin. If the chain is heavily worn, replacing or rebuilding the affected sections may be more reliable than trying to reuse damaged components.
