Working in sand accelerates undercarriage wear because fine abrasive grains get into pins, bushings, rollers, idlers, sprockets, and the track-to-ground contact points, turning normal movement into continuous grinding. Wet or damp sand is often even more harmful because it packs into the undercarriage and stays there longer, increasing friction and heat.

The first parts to show wear are usually the bushings and sprocket teeth, followed by roller treads, idler faces, and link rails. Signs of sand-related wear include faster-than-normal chain elongation, noisy operation, hotter components after travel, uneven roller or idler wear, and sand buildup around the frame, guards, and chain path. If the machine travels a lot, reverses often, or turns sharply in sand, wear usually increases faster.

Practical control starts with keeping the undercarriage clean and inspecting it more often than you would in firmer ground. • Remove packed sand from rollers, idlers, sprockets, and guards after shifts • Check track tension within the OEM range; do not run overly tight • Reduce unnecessary travel, high-speed reversing, and sharp turns • Inspect for uneven wear, loose hardware, and damaged seals • Watch for heat, unusual noise, or vibration after long runs

In sand, it is wise to shorten inspection intervals because wear can progress quickly even when the chain is sealed and lubricated; internal sealing helps, but it does not stop external abrasion from sand. The biggest mistake is assuming a track that still “looks okay” is not wearing fast, because sand can remove material long before failure becomes obvious.
