How does working in sand affect undercarriage wear?

Sand is the most abrasive common working environment for an undercarriage. Fine particles work into every moving interface — bushing to sprocket, link rail to roller tread, idler flange to link — and act as a continuous grinding paste, wearing external surfaces far faster than clay or loam. Wet sand is worse than dry, because it clings and packs. Countermeasures: run track tension slightly looser than standard (within the OEM range) so trapped sand can escape, wash the undercarriage regularly, avoid unnecessary travel and high-speed reversing, and measure components more frequently — halving the normal inspection interval is sensible. Expect noticeably shorter component life in sand and budget accordingly; sealed and lubricated chains protect internal wear but external wear still accelerates.
