An excavator undercarriage typically lasts about 4,000 to 6,000 operating hours, but real life can be much shorter or longer depending on conditions and maintenance. In light-duty, well-maintained use, some machines go beyond that range; in severe abrasion, the wear can start much earlier.

The undercarriage wears as a system, so life is not determined by one part alone. Track chains, shoes, rollers, idlers, sprockets, seals, and hardware all wear at different rates. A machine working in rock, sand, demolition, or mud, or one that travels long distances and turns sharply, will usually wear faster than a machine that stays in softer ground and moves less.

Signs it is time to inspect more closely include: • track pitch growth or loose, snaking tracks • sharp or hooked sprocket teeth • flat-spotted rollers or worn idler rims • oil leakage from seals • cracked or missing shoes • uneven wear from poor track tension or misalignment.
