// Q&A · Track Chains

What is chain pitch and how is it measured on a track chain?

Expert Answer

Chain pitch is the center-to-center distance between two consecutive track pins. It is one of the main dimensions used to identify a track chain, and it also helps show wear when the chain has elongated over time.

To measure it, clean the chain first and make sure it is properly tensioned and straight. Then measure from the center of one pin to the center of the next pin in line; for better accuracy, measure across several links, add the total distance, and divide by the number of pitches measured. A caliper, tape measure, or dedicated gauge can be used, but the key is measuring pin center to pin center, not outside edge to outside edge.

On a track chain, pitch matters because it must match the sprocket and other undercarriage parts. If the measured pitch is longer than the nominal pitch, that usually indicates internal wear between the pin and bushing. Signs can include poor sprocket engagement, uneven wear, noise, or a machine that feels rough under load. Even small elongation can affect performance, so compare the measured value with the chain specification for your machine before ordering parts.

Common mistakes include measuring a dirty or loose chain, checking only one link, or confusing pitch with chain width or pin diameter. For the most reliable result, measure multiple pitches in the same section of chain and take the average.
