What does chain pitch mean in an undercarriage, and how do I measure it?

Expert Answer

Chain pitch is the center-to-center distance between two consecutive pin centers in an undercarriage track chain. In practical terms, it is one of the key measurements that tells you whether the chain will match the sprocket and other wear parts correctly.

To measure it, find a straight, clean section of the chain with as little wear as possible. Measure from the center of one pin to the center of the next pin with a caliper, rule, or tape; for better accuracy, measure across several pitches and divide by the number of spaces. This helps reduce error from wear, dirt, or slight reading mistakes.

A worn chain can “grow” in pitch because of internal wear in the pin and bushing joints, so a single measurement on a badly worn chain may not represent the original size. If the chain is heavily worn, damaged, or has mixed components, use the machine model, OEM part number, and track shoe width as supporting information when identifying the correct replacement.

Typical signs that pitch may be off include poor sprocket engagement, uneven wear on the chain or sprocket teeth, noise, vibration, or a chain that does not seat correctly on the drive system. If you are replacing one undercarriage part, check the entire mating set: chain, sprocket/segments, rollers, and idler should all be compatible.

Common mistakes to avoid: measuring over worn or stretched sections, measuring from outer edges instead of pin centers, and assuming all chains on the machine are the same just because they look similar. VANROCK supplies undercarriage components such as track chains, rollers, idlers, sprockets, rubber tracks, rubber pads, and track bolts and nuts through an appointed dealer network, with pricing provided on request. If you mention an OEM brand such as Caterpillar or Komatsu, VANROCK is an independent manufacturer and is not affiliated with the OEM.
