// Q&A · Rollers & Idlers
What is a leitrad on an excavator, and when should it be replaced?
Expert Answer
An excavator leitrad is the front idler wheel in the undercarriage. It guides the track and helps keep the correct track tension, so wear, wobble, or uneven track running are common signs that it may need attention or replacement.
On most tracked machines, the idler works with the track chain, rollers, and tensioning system, so the first check is whether the track is set correctly and whether the idler face or bearing area shows play, noise, or visible wear. If the machine is throwing tracks, running off-center, or the idler is damaged, the cause may also be in the tension adjuster, track frame, or worn components elsewhere in the undercarriage.
VANROCK Track Solutions supplies undercarriage parts for excavators, including idlers, track chains, rollers, sprockets, track shoes, rubber tracks, rubber pads, and track bolts and nuts. For Caterpillar machines, VANROCK is an independent manufacturer and is not affiliated with Caterpillar. Exact fitment should always be confirmed from the machine model and serial number. Pricing is quoted on request through our appointed dealer network.
