What is a transmission sprocket on an excavator or dozer undercarriage?
Expert Answer
A transmission sprocket is the toothed wheel that drives a chain or track by engaging its links and transferring rotary power. On undercarriage systems, it is usually called the drive sprocket and it works with the track chain to move the machine forward or backward; on tracked equipment, it is a key wear part that must match the correct pitch and tooth profile.
The main difference from a gear is how it engages: a sprocket works with a chain, while gears mesh directly with another gear. In crawler undercarriages, the sprocket must match the track chain series, tooth count, and mounting style, or the chain will not run correctly and wear can increase quickly. If you are diagnosing a problem, look for hooked teeth, uneven wear, noise, or a track that rides poorly on the sprocket.
