What is the difference between an elevated sprocket and an oval track dozer undercarriage?

An oval (conventional) undercarriage places the sprocket at the rear of the track roller frame, in line with the idler, so the chain forms an oval loop. An elevated sprocket design — best known from Caterpillar's high-drive D-series dozers — raises the sprocket above the frame, forming a triangular track loop. The elevated layout isolates the final drive from ground shock and keeps it out of mud and water, and the sprocket engages the chain over a larger arc. For parts buyers the practical point is that the two layouts use different chains, segment groups and roller configurations, so the machine model must be identified exactly.
