Sealed and lubricated track chains (SALT) keep oil or grease inside the pin-and-bushing joint, so the metal surfaces are separated and wear is reduced. Dry track chains have no internal lubricant in that joint, so they are simpler, but they generally wear faster in abrasive, high-load, or high-hour operation.

The practical difference is service life versus simplicity. SALT chains are usually the better choice when the machine runs long shifts, works in dirt, sand, rock, or other abrasive conditions, or where downtime is costly. Dry chains can be suitable for lighter-duty use, shorter operating cycles, or applications where operating conditions are less severe and replacement intervals are less critical.

You can often spot the need for a SALT chain by looking at the job: excavators, dozers, and other tracked machines working in harsh ground conditions typically benefit from sealed lubrication. Signs that a chain is wearing out include chain pitch growth, noisy operation, stiff or tight links, poor engagement with sprockets, and accelerated wear on pins, bushings, and rollers. Regular inspection should include chain pitch, bushing condition, and overall undercarriage wear, because chain type affects the whole wear pattern.
