Skid steer tracks are usually over-the-tire tracks fitted to a wheeled skid steer, while compact track loader tracks are dedicated rubber tracks used on a factory-built tracked machine. In short: OTT tracks go over tires; CTL tracks replace the whole wheel undercarriage and are not interchangeable with OTT tracks.

The difference matters because the machine design is different. A skid steer with OTT tracks still relies on its tires and uses the track only as an add-on for more flotation and traction. A compact track loader has a full undercarriage with rubber tracks, sprockets, idlers, rollers, and a frame designed to carry the machine’s weight on tracks from the start.

When choosing the right track, check whether the machine is a wheeled skid steer or a true CTL. For CTLs, track selection is based on the machine model and the track’s width, pitch, and number of links, plus the undercarriage design. For skid steers, the key decision is whether the tires can accept OTT tracks and whether you need steel or rubber add-on tracks for the job site.

Practical signs you may be dealing with the wrong type include poor fit, rubbing on the frame, unusual wear, derailment, or reduced traction.
