An excavator undercarriage is made up of the track chain, track shoes, sprocket, idler, rollers, track adjuster/recoil system, and the fasteners that hold the track shoes in place. Together, these parts support the machine, move it forward and backward, and keep the track running straight and under the right tension.

The track chain is the base structure. Pins and bushings connect each link and let the chain flex as it travels around the undercarriage. Track shoes bolt to the chain and create the ground contact surface, so they provide traction, flotation, and stability on different soils.

The sprocket, driven by the final drive, engages the chain bushings and pulls the track around the machine. At the front, the idler guides the chain and helps keep alignment. The track adjuster and recoil spring maintain correct tension and absorb shock from impacts or debris, reducing the chance of derailment.

Bottom rollers carry the machine’s weight and let the track roll under load. Carrier rollers support the upper section of the chain so it stays elevated and runs smoothly across the top of the frame. Track bolts and nuts secure the shoes to the links, and they must be checked for tightness and damage because loose fasteners can quickly lead to shoe movement and uneven wear.

In practice, wear on one part often affects the others. Common signs include noisy operation, uneven shoe wear, stretched chain pitch, or a track that runs too loose or too tight.
