Rubber Tracks vs Steel Tracks: Which Should You Run?
Rubber tracks or steel tracks for your mini excavator or CTL? Compare lifespan, cost per hour, surface damage, traction and resale — plus hybrid options like bolt-on pads.
01The short answer
Under ~8 tonnes and working around finished surfaces, kerbs and mixed urban sites: rubber tracks. Heavy demolition, quarry, forestry or constant rock: steel tracks. In between, the decision comes down to surface protection versus cut resistance — and how disciplined your operators are about pivot turns on concrete.
02Cost per hour, not sticker price
A quality rubber track typically runs 1,200–2,000 hours; a steel undercarriage on the same machine can run 2,500–4,000 but costs more up front and transmits more vibration. Divide price by realistic hours for your ground: on abrasive rock rubber can drop under 800 hours and steel wins decisively; on landscaping and utility work rubber usually wins on both cost and versatility.
03What makes a rubber track survive
Continuous (jointless) steel cords — a joined cord is a pre-made failure point; forged and through-hardened metal cores that grip the drive sprocket without rounding; and a cut-resistant outer compound. 04Hybrids: pads and interchangeable systems

How long do rubber tracks last?+
Typically 1,200–2,000 hours. Avoiding sharp pivot turns on concrete, keeping correct tension, and clearing packed debris from the undercarriage are the three biggest life extenders.
