Excavator Undercarriage Inspection: The 10-Point Checklist

01Why inspect on a schedule

Undercarriage is typically 50% of an excavator's lifetime repair cost. A 20-minute inspection every 250 hours catches wear while you still have choices — replace one component now, or plan a full undercarriage job at the next service window instead of an emergency field failure.

02The 10-point checklist

1. Track tension — check sag against the OEM spec; over-tension is the #1 avoidable wear accelerator. 2. Track chain pitch — measure elongation over 4 pitches (see our track chain wear guide). 3. Bushing OD — look for polishing and measure at the sprocket contact point. 4. Link/rail height — measure and compare to the wear limit. 5. Track shoes — check grouser height and look for bent or cracked plates and loose hardware.

6. Bottom rollers — measure tread diameter, check for flat spots, leaks and seized rollers. 7. Carrier rollers — spin by hand where safe; a dry, noisy or seized top roller drags the chain. 8. Front idler — measure tread, check flange wear and look for oil weep at the seal. 9. Sprocket / segments — inspect tooth profile for sharpening and hooking. 10. Frame & hardware — guards, bolts, recoil spring condition, and evidence of packing (mud/rock buildup).

03Reading the wear pattern

Uneven wear tells a story: flange wear on one side of the rollers usually means misalignment or worn idler guides; scalloped roller treads point to a seized roller upstream; rapid bushing wear with normal link wear indicates over-tension or dry-joint failure. Photograph measurements each service so the trend, not just the number, drives your decision.

04Turning inspection into a parts plan
