Winter Undercarriage Care: Mud, Freeze & Cold-Weather Damage

How freezing weather destroys undercarriages: frozen packing, brittle impact damage, seized rollers — and the end-of-shift routine that prevents the classic winter failures.

01What winter actually does to an undercarriage

The killer is packing plus freeze. Wet clay and snow pack between rollers, chain and sprocket during the shift, then freeze overnight into concrete. Next morning's first travel forces rotating components through solid ice: seals tear, rollers seize, lugs strip off rubber tracks, and an over-packed chain runs effectively over-tensioned — multiplying loads on pins and bushings. Add cold-brittle steel (impact toughness drops with temperature) and hard-frozen ground that behaves like rock, and winter becomes the highest-wear season for most fleets.

02The end-of-shift routine that saves thousands

Ten minutes before parking: travel a few machine lengths back and forth on clean ground to sling out loose material, then clear packed mud from rollers, idler pockets and the sprocket with a shovel or pressure washer. Park on planks, gravel or mats — not in standing water or mud that will freeze around the tracks. Where possible leave the machine with tracks slightly LOOSER than summer spec: frozen packing will take up the slack.

03Cold-morning start discipline

If the tracks are frozen down, don't force travel — break the ice around the chain first; drive motors can generate enough torque to strip a rubber track or damage a final drive against frozen tracks. Move off slowly, short distances, letting components free up before working speed. Re-check tension after an hour — apparent morning tension drops once ice clears.

FAQ

Should track tension be different in winter?+

Run to spec but check far more often, and bias to the looser end in packing conditions — frozen material effectively tightens the track. Never leave a machine parked tight in freezing mud.

My tracks are frozen to the ground — what do I do?+

Break the ice contact around both tracks mechanically (bar, bucket assist) before travelling. Forcing frozen tracks with the drive motors strips rubber tracks and can damage sprockets and final drives.

Do rubber tracks handle cold badly?+

Quality compounds stay serviceable well below freezing, but cold rubber cuts more easily and stripped lugs from frozen-down starts are the classic winter failure. Gentle first movements and clean parking spots prevent most of it.
