Measure each undercarriage component against its new dimension and its service limit, then calculate wear as a percentage of consumed life. In simple terms: wear % = [(new measurement - current measurement) ÷ (new measurement - wear limit)] × 100, using the correct OEM chart for that specific part and machine.

Start by cleaning out packed soil and rock so the contact surfaces can be seen and measured correctly. Typical checks include rail height, pin and bushing wear, roller diameter, idler tread, sprocket tooth profile, shoe width, and track sag. Use the right tool for each reading: calipers or a wear gauge for round parts, a depth gauge for rail and shoe wear, and a tape or straight edge for track sag. Make sure the machine is on level ground and follow the OEM procedure for whether the track should be loaded or unloaded during measurement.

The number only means something when it is compared to the correct spec. A roller, idler, bushing, and shoe can all wear at different rates, so a single “undercarriage percentage” can be misleading unless it is a summary of several component readings. Watch for uneven wear patterns too, such as sharp sprocket teeth, thin bushings, flat-spotted rollers, leaking seals, or excessive sag, because these often show that one part is affecting the rest of the system.

A common mistake is using estimated wear or seller claims instead of actual measurements. Another mistake is comparing a worn part to a replacement part without checking the OEM replacement limit, which can distort the percentage. For best results, record each measurement separately, keep the machine model and hours with the readings, and use the manufacturer’s wear tables to decide whether the part is in the inspect, rotate, or replace range.
