// Q&A · Track Tension & Alignment
How do you adjust excavator track tension with grease and know if it is too tight or loose?
Expert Answer
Excavator track tension is adjusted by adding grease to tighten the track and releasing grease from the track adjuster to loosen it. The correct setting depends on the machine size, carrier design, working conditions, and the manufacturer’s sag specification; over-tight tracks wear rollers, idlers, sprockets, and the chain faster, while loose tracks can derail more easily.
To check it, park on level ground, clean the undercarriage, and measure track sag at the midpoint between the carrier roller and idler according to the machine manual. If the track looks “bar tight” with no sag, it is often too tight. If it droops excessively, rides unevenly, or throws track during turns, it is usually too loose. Always relieve pressure carefully because the grease cylinder can store a lot of force.
Common problems when track tension will not change include a blocked grease passage, a damaged grease fitting, a seized adjuster, or a leaking seal in the track tension cylinder. If grease will not enter, or the track loses tension again quickly, the adjuster assembly needs inspection before more grease is added.
