// Q&A · Track Tension & Alignment

How do you adjust mini excavator track tension and know if it is too tight or too loose?

Expert Answer

The right tension depends on the machine, the track type, and working conditions, so there is no single universal setting. In practice, you want enough sag for the track to move freely over the undercarriage, but not so much slack that it climbs off the idler or sprocket under load.

Typical signs of too tight track tension include stiff travel, faster undercarriage wear, heat buildup, and a machine that feels reluctant to steer. Signs of too loose tension include track slap, poor guidance on turns, and the track coming off after side-loading or working on uneven ground.

A good check is to inspect both sides on level ground with the machine clean. If one side is noticeably different, look for packed mud, a leaking adjuster, worn idlers, or uneven component wear before changing tension.

If you are diagnosing repeated derailment, measure sag, inspect the carrier and lower rollers, front idler, sprocket wear, and track chain condition.
