// Q&A · Rubber Tracks

How do you put a rubber track back on a mini excavator?

Expert Answer

First, make the track safe to handle by lowering the attachment, parking on level ground, and fully relieving track tension. In most cases, a rubber track is refitted by guiding it over the drive sprocket and front idler, then slowly rotating the travel motor or moving the machine a small amount so the track seats correctly. If the track has jumped off because of low tension, debris, a worn idler/roller, or a damaged track, fix the root cause before retensioning it.

The easiest reinstall is usually done with the machine slightly lifted on the affected side and the track loosened enough to give extra slack. Keep hands clear of the sprocket, idler, and pinch points. If the track keeps derailing, check for uneven roller wear, seized rollers, damaged guides, misalignment, or a tensioner that will not hold grease pressure. After the track is back on, retension it to the machine maker’s specification and recheck after a short period of use, because new or recently refitted tracks can settle.
