// Q&A · Track Tension & Alignment

How do you put a rubber track back on an excavator?

Expert Answer

A rubber track is refitted by safely relieving track tension, placing the track around the drive sprocket and idler, then rotating the undercarriage while guiding the track into place. The key is to work with the machine securely supported and the tensioner fully released before forcing the track back on.

Start on level ground, lower the bucket and blade, and support the machine with proper stands or blocks so the undercarriage is not held up only by hydraulics. Clean mud and debris from the undercarriage, then remove the tension cover and slowly release the grease from the track adjuster. Once the track is loose, position it over the front idler and drive sprocket, then use controlled movement and a pry bar if needed to seat it over the rollers. After the track is centered, pump grease back into the adjuster until the sag matches the manufacturer’s specification.

A few checks help prevent the track from coming off again: worn idlers, rollers, sprocket teeth, damaged guide lugs, or over-tight tension. Uneven machine steering can also point to a tension or wear problem.
