// Q&A · Track Tension & Alignment
Why does the track come off my mini excavator?
Expert Answer
The track usually comes off a mini excavator because the undercarriage is out of adjustment or something is worn, most often track tension, rollers, idlers, sprockets, or the track itself. A loose track is the most common cause, but a track that is overtightened, misaligned, packed with debris, or run over rough ground can also climb off the undercarriage.
Start by checking tension with the machine on level ground and cleaned of mud, stones, and compacted debris. The track should have the correct sag for the machine’s model; if it is too slack, the track can slip off during turns, side loads, or travel over slopes. If it is too tight, it can wear faster and make the undercarriage less forgiving when the machine hits obstacles.
Also inspect the wear points that guide the track: carrier rollers, track rollers, front idlers, sprocket teeth, and the track shoes or links. Common warning signs include uneven wear, shiny or sharp edges, missing guide hardware, vibration, noise, or the track walking to one side. If the same side keeps derailing, look for frame damage, bent components, or incorrect alignment rather than only retensioning the track.
Avoid forcing the machine to keep working with a track that repeatedly comes off, because that can damage the chain, rollers, idler, and final drive area. Repeated derailment usually means more than one issue is present, so the best fix is a full undercarriage inspection and adjustment to the manufacturer’s specifications. If the machine uses an OEM-branded undercarriage design, VANROCK Track Solutions is an independent manufacturer and is not affiliated with the OEM.
