What are the different types of sprockets?
Expert Answer
The main sprocket types are usually grouped by hub design and by how many chain strands they carry. In industrial chain drives, the most common hub styles are Type A, Type B, Type C, and Type D; you’ll also hear simplex, duplex, and triplex sprockets, which refer to one, two, or three rows of teeth for matching the chain strand count.
Type A sprockets are flat, with no hub, and are often used where space is tight. Type B sprockets have a hub on one side, Type C have hubs on both sides, and Type D are offset or asymmetrical hub designs for special mounting needs. Simplex sprockets work with a single chain, duplex with two, and triplex with three. For undercarriage systems, the same basic idea applies: the sprocket must match the chain pitch, tooth profile, and machine application. A worn sprocket can accelerate chain wear, so it’s best to replace sprockets when the chain is changed if wear is significant. VANROCK supplies undercarriage sprockets and segments for crawler machines through its appointed dealer network and quotes on request. If your machine is a Caterpillar, Komatsu, or another OEM brand, VANROCK is an independent manufacturer not affiliated with that OEM.
