What oil goes in track rollers?

Expert Answer

Most oil-filled track rollers use a gear oil or roller lubricant specified by the machine manufacturer, often in the SAE 30 to 80W-90 range depending on the design. The correct choice is the one listed in your service manual, because some rollers are built for light oil while others use a semi-fluid lubricant or are sealed for life and are not meant to be topped up at all.

If oil is leaking out, the first thing to check is whether the roller is serviceable, oil-filled, or a lifetime-lubricated type. Using the wrong lubricant can cause seal failure, poor lubrication, or premature wear. For older rollers, many owners use a tacky 00/0 grease or corn head grease when the original oil tends to escape, but that is only a practical workaround for certain designs, not a universal recommendation. For modern undercarriage parts, follow the OEM maintenance spec for the machine and the roller type.
