When should I replace my excavator tracks?

You should replace excavator tracks when wear starts causing performance problems, not after a failure. For steel track chains, the usual replacement point is when pin-and-bushing wear is close to the allowable limit for that chain size; for rubber tracks, replace them when the carcass is damaged, tension cannot be held, or the steel cords and lugs are failing.

Measure steel track wear with the correct wear tables for your exact chain, then compare the pin, bushing, and link wear with a caliper or proper measuring tool. If the track is repeatedly coming off, the chain is stretching beyond normal adjustment, the sprocket teeth are becoming sharp or hooked, or you can see stepped links and heavy elongation, the undercarriage is telling you it is near end of life. At that stage, waiting longer often means you are no longer just replacing tracks, but also damaging sprockets, rollers, and idlers.

For rubber tracks, the main warning signs are constant loss of tension, deep cracking, torn lugs, exposed steel cords, cuts through the tread, or visible metal showing through the rubber. If the track is slipping on the sprocket or the machine needs frequent re-tensioning, do not ignore it. Also inspect both tracks together: one badly worn side often means the other side is not far behind, especially if the machine works on abrasive ground or is used with poor tension settings.

A good rule is to replace tracks before they fail completely. Common mistakes to avoid are over-tightening to “get more life,” running with dirt packed into the undercarriage, and mixing a worn track with badly worn sprockets or rollers. If you are unsure, inspect the whole undercarriage as a set, because replacing only one part too late can shorten the life of the new track.
