Release track tension only on firm, level ground with the machine parked, engine off, attachment lowered, and the machine blocked so it cannot move. Never stand in line with the grease fitting, relief valve, or recoil unit; if your model’s track tensioner is under high pressure, a sudden release can be dangerous. Follow the OEM service procedure for your exact machine before touching the adjuster. Most track systems use either a grease-filled tensioner or a mechanical adjuster. On grease systems, remove the access cover if needed, then slowly loosen the relief valve or fitting just enough for grease to escape and the idler to move back. Do not remove the fitting completely or crack it open fast. On mechanical systems, back off the adjuster gradually and evenly, then stop as soon as the track begins to slacken.

Check track sag after the pressure is released. A track that is too tight can accelerate wear on chains, bushings, sprockets, rollers, and idlers, while a track that is too loose can climb off the sprocket or skip in load. Measure sag exactly where the operator’s manual specifies, because the method can differ between machines with top rollers and those with top slides. As a practical habit, clean out packed mud or debris before checking tension, since material in the undercarriage can make the track seem tighter than it really is.
