Check excavator track tension before every shift as a quick walk-around, and make a measured check at least every 50 operating hours. Inspect it immediately after working in mud, clay, rock, long travel cycles, or after a major change in temperature or undercarriage condition, because tension can change fast.

A good check is not just visual. Compare the track sag to the specification in the operator’s manual for your exact machine, since the correct sag varies by model and undercarriage design. As a general rule, too much sag can mean the track is loose and may derail or jump, while a track that is too tight can accelerate wear on chains, rollers, idlers, sprockets, and shoes. If the machine has been cleaned or sat idle, recheck after a short run because packed debris or fresh grease adjustment can change the reading.

Practical signs you should check sooner include uneven wear, noisy rolling, vibration, the track riding high on the top rollers, or the track rubbing hard and feeling stiff. Also check after replacing undercarriage parts, because new components can change the fit. For accurate measurement, park on level ground, support the machine safely, and measure sag the same way each time so you can spot trends instead of guessing.

Avoid these common mistakes: checking only when a problem appears, measuring on uneven ground, ignoring mud buildup between the rollers and idler, and tightening tracks beyond the manual spec. Over-tight tracks often wear faster than loose tracks, so “tighter” is not better.
