// Q&A · Track Tension & Alignment

How do you adjust mini excavator track tension?

Expert Answer

Start on level ground and clean out mud, stones and debris around the undercarriage. Then measure sag at the specified point between the carrier rollers or guide frame, with the machine in the correct position and the track relaxed. Add grease to the adjuster fitting to tighten the track, or relieve tension only in the safe way described in the operator’s manual, because the adjuster can store high pressure. Never place your hands near the idler, recoil spring or grease fitting while pressure is being released.

A good check is to compare both sides: one track that is much tighter than the other can point to a worn idler, seized roller, damaged recoil system, or packed debris. Also inspect for uneven wear, missing guide blocks, bent shoes, and track links that look dry, stretched or damaged. If the machine repeatedly throws a track, tension is only one part of the cause.

For the best result, set tension when the undercarriage is clean and the machine is on the same surface it normally works on. Soft ground often needs slightly different handling than hard, dry ground, but you should still follow the manufacturer’s settings rather than guessing.
